The Qur'an: A Chronological Modern English Interpretation, by Jason Criss Howk

I wrote this book because I want to help people understand Islam. This is not an attempt to spread a religion or to denigrate it. I offer it as a gift to anyone seeking to bridge the gap in their understanding of Islam. In the end, education and understanding—and acceptance of other cultures—will unite the world against hatred. Let this be a part of that education. This book is intended for audiences that have very little familiarity with Islam, the Qur’an, or Muslim culture. It also may be beneficial for Muslims that cannot read Arabic but find the current English versions difficult to read.As a student of Islam and frequent wanderer of the broader Middle East region for over 20 years I have had many an occasion to read the Qur’an, visit mosques, and talk with my acquaintances about Islam. I took advantage of every opportunity in my studies to learn about Islam from many different points of view. I also focused on the little-known “Ibadhi Muslims” of Oman in my postgraduate thesis. While many interpretations of the Qur’an have been written by Muslims (whose first language is usually not English), those translations are often difficult to read. I attempt here to make an easy-to-read version in an unbiased way using modern English. There are people that feel threatened by Islam as a religion. Some people assume that a Muslim translating the Qur’an into English softens the language to make it more pleasant and less threatening, so they can spread the religion. Other interpreters are even suspected of making the passages sound like God is condoning unlawful violence. On the other side of the equation, many translations or analysis of the Qur’an are done by non-Muslims that seek to find faults in the messages of the Qur’an or vilify the entire religion of Islam. I seek a middle ground here. My sole intent is to show people what is and is not in the Qur’an and thereby, strictly speaking, what could be expected from a Muslim that adheres to the majority of the teachings of the Qur’an. I think most readers will find that, like all religious people, not all Muslim adherents follow the teachings of the entire Qur’an.

A.J. Arberry,The Koran Interpreted (1955), does what few other translators- before or after him - have done: acknowledge how deep isthe commitment, how necessary the patience, to pursue trans-lating any work, but especially the Noble Book, the Holy Qur'an.Of other translators Arberry famously said:Though many can certainly claim to have read the Koran, indeedover and over again, and to know it well, I think it can be reasonablyasserted that their understanding and appreciation of the book willalways fall short of what may be attained by one who undertakes totranslate it in full and with all possible fidelity." (Preface to Volume Twoof The Koran Interpreted, p 8).Such a tribute applies to Major Jason Howk: he gave the earlymornings of each day for 13 months to translate one by one each ofthe 114 suras/chapters of the Qur'an "with all possible fidelity". His isan effort of diligence, patience, and high readability, even for those whomay, as many will, disagree with his choice to provide a tanzil (revelation)instead of a mushaf (Uthmanic codex) sequence to his renditions.Bruce B Lawrence, author of The Koran in English - A Biography (2017)

Easy to read I will certainly give it that but the reliability of the "translation"is questionable. Classical Arabic is not modern Arabic and even modern Arabic is not succinctly translated in to English. Also use of the word bastards in the text is inappropriate at best. Gave a two star rating because the man certainly did give it the old college try, but the quran, or any other religious scripture for that matter, should not be treated so flippantly as to include profanity when there are alternatives. I wish I could give more positive review, but this is probably left avoided by anyone truly seeking to understand what the Qur'an states. It should also be noted that some of the author's "historical" background mentioned as the setting for the revelation of Qur'an to Muhammad pbuh is simply not accurate. If your intention is to learn the truth about what Qur'an teaches please do yourself a great favor and leave this alone.

In a world in which so much of our information is coming from people trying to prove one thing or another, Jason Howk made a difficult and noble decision by deciding to do a straight Arabic to modern English translation of the Qur'an. Difficult because it is so much easier to approach the publishing industry and tell them you have an ideologically skewed perspective to sell in today's polarized world; noble because Jason did what he believes is right: To provide people the information they need to have an informed opinion about the world's fastest growing religion. What that opinion ultimately is--is really up to them after reading the book. This is unfortunately what our society is increasingly moving away from - learning the underlying facts and forming an opinion based on what you find as opposed to simply searching for only that information which supports a per-existing point of view. Having read it as well another translation of the Qu'ran, I can tell you this was much easier to digest and understand given my native language is English. Strongly recommend to all who want to really know what the Qu'ran actually says.

For anyone who has tried before (like me) to read the Quran, Howk's work is refreshingly accessible. The result is a work which doesn't intimidate and/or confuse the average reader... thus making it possible to persevere through the text and gain understanding of what it does and does not say.It is clear that Howk has done as much as he can... perhaps all that is possible... to present a translation devoid of political and personal agendas. Such is rare in this time of hyperbole and polarization. The work should be celebrated and applauded... but more importantly, read by all. It is about time someone has stepped up to provide the material by which folks can become educated and informed about Islam. It's time to move past the strongly held opinions rising to the level of convictions which are NOT based on accurate information and knowledge ... the phenomenon that makes stereotypes and discrimination flourish amongst a society that should know better by now. Thanks Jason

I bought this book because I was sure I was totally ignorant where Islam is concerned. The book is easy to read and understand and I feel it is a gift if you care enough to learn and not live your life with an uninformed bias against this religion. It is not meant to convert one to Islam just to open your eyes. I was amazed at the similarities in their beliefs as compared to my own Christian beliefs. I am so very glad that I bought this book. One should read it with an open mind and open eyes...it will surprise you.

To steal a quote from Tony Robins, "To effectively communicate, we must realize that we are all different in the way we perceive the world and use this understanding as a guide to our communication with others." With this book, Jason attempts to respectfully teach about the Qur'an and the tenants of Islam in order to help better understand it. Through better understanding comes better communication. As a military officer, Jason spent a significant portion of his career in the Middle East observing and learning about Islam. It is what stoked his passion to take on this project as he believed there were wide-spread misunderstandings of the faith and those that practice it. As such, he sought to provide a new way of presenting the Qur'an; a way that could be used by everyone from scholars, to students, to academia, to military professionals, to followers of the faith who do not speak Arabic. This is an exceptional scholarly effort informed by very real experience from years of travel across the Middle East. It is grounded by a humility and respect for the topic at hand. At the core of this effort is an attempt to create better understanding and that shines through in every respect.
